DVR options

Recently Cablevision totally screwed up our billing which has been on automatic pay for over a decade. It is a very long story I won't bore you all with but we finally got it somewhat figured out. I was pretty steamed about the whole thing and was seriously considering going to another provider for TV and ditching phone altogether as we really only use our cell phones anyway. So I talked with a nice girl in disconnects and she said she could lower our rate and give us extra services. So I reluctantly agreed and she turned things on as well as sending us a new box. Well we had already gotten a Samsung replacement for one of our 3 boxes and at first thought it was pretty good but we have come to hate this box with a passion. One of the things we were "given" to stay with CV was DVR+ well I can honestly tell you it is the worst damn thing in the world. The fact that they charge people for this non-service is comical. I would never pay for this service now after having it for only a week or two. You cannot do any of the things we are used to doing on the DVR box like pause live TV. rewind, etc. So my question is what are the options through CV for DVR cableboxes? Are the SA HD DVR boxes the only option they give for a DVR box? Can I purchase a box of my own and use it on CV's network? What about Tivo is it any better at recording and watching TV than the SA boxes? I mean we have an SA HD DVR box now and it works OK I guess it is still much better than the Samsung box which takes like 3-4 seconds to just change channels???? What is up with that anyway? The regular cable box SD on our regular 13" TV in the kitchen is like lightening fast at changing channels. The 2 HD boxes just take forever to change channels. I switched from HDMI to Component input/output and that seemed to help slightly on the SA box. I have not tried that on the Samsung box and probably won't as we are going to just ditch that box and get another built in DVR box so we can do what we are used to doing. So the "deal" the girl gave me in disconnects has not turned out to be much of a deal after all. We did get a reduction in our bill and she did bump the speed on my boost connection but I was happy with regular boost Boost+ doesn't really light my fire at all. Sorry for the rant but the service has steadily gotten worse mostly the TV I mean it is really bad pixelation, stuttering, stalls, audio dropouts you name we see it every single day.
