Optimum/Altice - using my own networking equipment

So I've been a fios customer for a while. Due to pricing and hardware issues (will explain below) I am looking to change to Optimum. I had Optimum like over a decade ago, and now I guess its called Altice or something? I guess Altice is newer hardware/platform for Optimum? My biggest issue with Fios is I tried several ways (including the methods given here on the forum) to bypass the Fios router and use my own router. I have a fairly complex home automation/network with over 100 IP devices. I tried the fios router and always had issues. I went to put in my own router (Mikrotik) and tried various ways to get access to my Fios boxes plus internet to my home devices. I cannot get the fios boxes to see the outside world, so though things work slowly they are stopping as the boxes are requiring firmware updates, I was never able to use the Fios apps because the boxes cannot see the outside world, etc. Would I have any issues using my own router but getting full services from both Optimum/Altice as well using my personal router for my own equipment? Along with my own equipment I do run a VPN so I can access my network when I am not home. If so are there restrictions to PPTP, IPSec, L2TP, etc? I hope this all makes sense!
