Hi. Am helping my parents out and will be at their place from out of state so I want to make sure I have all my ducks in a row before going.
First, Cablevision has given them at TM1602. They currently have a TM822. I assume this is the modem and the newer model supports faster speeds. I think they are on a 400/400 plan, so this seems to make sense as a thing to do. Is this a simple drop in replacement? They told my Dad it was that easy, but I am not sure if anything was lost in translation. Does it need to be provisioned, etc?
Second, since I have to help them frequently and I personally run pfSense at home and in a small office, I am going to yank the junky Optimum router/firewall/WAP and replace it with Netgate hardware running pfSense. That way I can set up VPN for all it's obvious benefits and do a bunch of other customizations for them. Is there anything I need to do so pfSense can grab a WAN ip? I really, really, really hope Cablevision allows this...
Thanks!!!
