Background: I'm OOL + OV, have been for 10+ years, still using the same modem. It's worked perfectly, haven't had to reset it in at least a year. A few years ago they started charging me $4.95+tax each month for the modem, which I own. I called to complain and they gave me a $5 promotional credit on the account each month. So basically a 35c price increase. Not worth fighting about.
A few weeks ago I got a package from OOL. Opened it up and it was a new modem with phone jack. Aside from the modem, only a packing slip "Thanks for your order" with an order number and self-install instructions -- no other explanation.
I called OOL CS and asked why I they sent me the modem, the phone rep had no idea. I read him the order number and he said that order did not exist in their system. Mysterious. I asked what I should do with the modem and he said a tech would call shortly to make an appointment to pick it up. Didn't happen.
I was planning to sell the modem on eBay when I got a phone call telling me that in order to receive the speed increase I had requested, I needed to install the modem. I never requested a speed increase. My guess is this is related to the new DOCSIS they're trying to implement and they're using misleading messaging to try to provoke people to get rid of their old modems.
Today the pressure tactics started. Whenever I browse to a non-secure site (HTTP sites only) I get a popup saying "Install your new modem, click here to find out how". Put it in my adblocker, problem solved. Or so I though. Now, once an hour, OOL takes over the WHOLE PAGE, completely replacing the content, and forcing me to click-through or reload. Super annoying.
What should I do? Any advice?
