The issue I've been having for the past few months is where my internet connection will just die and be down for a period of time that can be over an hour. During this time no amount of power cycling the modem will bring it back, it may connect for a few seconds but will just die again with a minute. The internet will always disconnect during or after a period of uploading. I upload videos on youtube and occasionally stream games over twitch and these are the instances where I notice the problem arising.
Uploading on youtube will kill the internet connection the quickest, I assume because it is uploading at the fastest speed possible. The sizes of the video files being uploaded are usually somewhere between 2GB and up to 10GB on the higher end depending on length and the type of video.
When streaming I notice that after some period of time (which is rather unpredictable) the connection will start becoming unstable until it eventually dies out completely.
This issue has been reoccurring for the last few months and is somewhat alleviated by limiting the bandwidth for upload to just around or under 5 mbps (although even that can occasionally lead to instability and the connection dying at times) for these activities.
I've been trying to figure out what the cause of the issue could be. One of my thoughts was some form of throttling since it only seems to happen when a moderate amount of uploading is occurring. However from several posts I've read here most people seem to say that throttling does not occur, and even then it appears to be way too aggressive to be throttling since I doubt Optimum would just cut a connection entirely for some period of time. I have tried swapping out modems. I believe the original one I had was an Arris TM822G, this was swapped out when I first started noticing these issues for an Arris 1602, and later I replaced it again with a Netgear CM600 when the issues continued (plus I wanted to avoid the nasty Puma issues with the optimum modems) but the problem has remained through them all. To ensure it had nothing to do with the coax wiring or a splitter in the house I also tried out connecting the modem directly to the line in to the house before any splitters. I've also tried connecting my PC directly to the modem bypassing my Asus router but get the same results, also tried using a different PC directly connected to the modem and no difference.
I'll also add that I had not noticed these issues until around late last summer. Before then I had been using the internet for uploading to youtube and had not experienced these issues, even despite the fact that I was probably using it more back then. I have called Optimum a few times over this period of time, but they haven't been able to do much, and the last time they just wanted to blame it on the Netgear modem, which I was half expecting, despite the problem occurring on every other modem I had with them as well.
If anyone has any idea on what the issue could be or has some recommendation on other tests or diagnosis I can run to try to learn more about the issue I appreciate it very much. I've tried about as much as I could figure out on my own anyway. Thank you for your time!
I'm attaching a screenshot of the Netgear modem signals, fyi this was after a recent reboot.
