Hey all,
I've been with FiOS for a 5 years now, happy, love the service, but price creep hit me so giving OOL a shot. Anyways, with FiOS it was always a nightmare if you wanted to run your own router if you had TV boxes in your house. Now that I'm switching to OOL I got excited and ordered a small low power box to run PFSense. Since I already have wireless AP units setup that are independent of my router this should be a breeze. I wanted to avoid paying this modem rental fee (whats up with that?), I ordered the Arris TM1602 off ebay from a highly rated re-seller. Seems like this is the standard / go to modem based on forum searches. Since its a owned modem, are there any downsides? Will it get the firmware updates that are needed to get this 16x channel download that I've been reading about?
With that said I do not want the OOL router. Do I tell the install guy that I have my own modem and router or do I have to go to the retail store to return this stuff after they do the installation? Any other tips/suggestions for when the install happens?
Spent most of the day, since it rained, cleaning up my wiring closet. Have a few more things to do..
